In the world of education, safety isn’t optional—it’s essential. That’s why our Paediatric First Aid (PFA) courses are designed specifically for schools, nurseries, and early years providers who want to meet Ofsted expectations, comply with the EYFS statutory framework, and most importantly, safeguard the children in their care.

The Paediatric First Aid course covers from birth-18 years. Therefore, all staff who are working with children in all school settings, should hold this qualification to ensure they are offering the best course of treatment for those in their care. 

Under the EYFS statutory framework, every early years setting must have at least one person with a current PFA certificate on-site at all times when children are present—and on all outings. Ofsted inspections assess your setting’s ability to respond to emergencies. Having trained staff is not just good practice—it’s a key part of your safeguarding and welfare provision.

       Who should be trained?

• Teaching staff
• Nursery and reception staff
• Teaching assistants
• Lunchtime supervisors
• Apprentices and volunteers (required to hold PFA from Sept 2025 to be counted in ratios)  

From 1 September 2025, the following people must hold a valid PFA certificate if they are to be counted in your statutory staff-to-child ratios:

-Students on long-term placements
-Apprentices aged 16 or over
-Volunteers aged 17 or over
-Staff who gained qualifications via the new experience-based route
If they don’t have a PFA certificate, they cannot be used in ratios and will be considered extra to staffing

 

Programme/Module Outline:

Content for Paediatric First Aid (2-day)

• CPR and AED use for infants and children
• Choking, bleeding, burns, and fractures
• Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
• Asthma, diabetes, seizures
• Emergency planning and incident reporting

Courses meet Annex A criteria of the EYFS framework and are available in:
12-hour full PFA certification (2 days) As stipulated by OFSTED for EYFS staff
6-hour Emergency PFA (1 day)
